Greater Chapin Community Endowment Awards Grants
January 31, 2014
Greater Chapin Community Endownent (GCCF), which operates under the umbrella of Central Carolina Community Foundation, announces grants to several philanthropic organizations – American Legion Post 193 Chapin, Explorer Post #11 and Newberry County Memorial Hospital Wellness Center. The grants to these organizations total more than $10,000.
The Explorers, a part of the Boys Scouts, train young men and women from ages 14-21 about the function of the fire service as a possible career choice. The $5,000 grant they received will help to purchase new fire equipment used to provide the training. The Explorers assist the local fire stations in support activities such as helping to roll out equipment at fires as well as cleaning the equipment after fires.
American Legion Post 193 Chapin received $3,600 to provide scholarships for 12 young men and women to attend Palmetto Boys State and Palmetto Girls State. These one-week leadership and citizenship training programs provide a unique way for outstanding high-school students to learn about the American system of government and politics by participating in a mock governmental system.
Newberry Memorial Hospital’s new Terrific Thursdays in Health program is free and available for ages 17 and up with weekly meetings held at Little Mountain Family Practice Facility. The program addresses the need for health education due to increasing numbers of overweight and obese individuals so that they can make better health and life choices to manage their health. Newberry Memorial Hospital received $1,500 for educational and promotional materials for the program.
